From the beginning ...
2016
June - volunteers Sue O'Neill and Di Schwarzl visited Jinja and distributed reusable sanitary products, donated by Days for Girls Avoca Beach, to girls in disadvantaged schools. This prompted a request for seed funding to start a workshop so products could be made locally for girls and women who could not afford the commercial alternative. In September, Pure Joy Women's Centre, run by Co-Founders Anyeno Grace and Okello Collins, began with 2 sewing machines, 2 domestic over-lockers and 20 enthusiastic volunteers.
2017
RCWW volunteers Joan Redmond and Di Schwarz visited Pure Joy. Sanitary kits were made for local schools and youth centres. We added 2 more machines and Pure Joy began making craft products for sale. November - they made uniforms (funded by RCWW) for the new Divine Mercy Primary School.
2018
February - Pure Joy catered for 2000 guests at the opening of Divine Mercy Primary School. April - Pure Joy Women Empowerment Uganda was registered as a Rotary Australia World Community Service project. The ladies catered for medical staff and volunteers at the 2018 Medical Outreach and distributed 225 sanitary kits to women who attended information family planning sessions. December - 110 custom-size compendiums were made for attendees at the 2019 Rotary Youth Leadership Award Conference.
2019
March - Project Mgr Joan held sewing workshops to teach the ladies how to make during conference bags for Rotary District 9685 RYPEN Winter Camp and the 12/24 zipped purse to fund the sanitary kit program. May - RCWW matched a donation from Rotary Club of Traralgon Central and purchased an industrial overlocker and a hand press stud machine to increase the capacity of the workshop and provide the women with commercial experience. June - 45 disadvantaged girls and women in an isolated township received free sanitary kits.
November - Project Mgrs Joan and Di visited the project to provide Tailoring workshops. During their visit, they opened a new Hairdressing Salon in an adjoining building. The Salon will provide skills training and generate income for the project. This expansion was made possible by a well supported movie fundraiser, a generous donation from Rotary Club of Padstow and the sale of craft products.
