Opera in the Arboretum 2020

Saturday 28 March 2020, Pearl Beach, 3 - 5.30pm

Opera in the Arboretum is an open-air, all-weather, picnic style event set in the Crommelin Native Arboretum in Pearl Beach, NSW. The venue provides a unique audience experience – the amphitheatre is set amid 5.5 hectares of coastal rainforest – a perfect setting to sit back and relax with friends and family and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of Opera beneath the Arboretum’s canopy of native trees.

Artists

An enchanting line-up of artists will perform opera’s best loved arias, duets and ensembles:

Julie Lea Goodwin is a principal soprano with Opera Australia. In 2019, she featured as Maria in the outdoor production of West Side Story on Sydney Harbour. For Opera Australia, Julie revisited the roles of Musetta in La bohème and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and sang Madama Cortese in Il viaggio a Reims. She also created the role of Wendy Whiteley in the World Premiere of Elena Kats- Chernin’s Whiteley.
With an international opera career spanning over thirty years, and more than one hundred roles in his repertoire, Daniel Sumegi has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Covent Garden and the Paris Opera, as well as major companies across the United States, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. Daniel Sumegi appears on CD in Beatrice di Tenda and Seattle Opera’s Ring Cycle.
Jacqueline Dark’s recent performances include The Mother Abbess in the National Tour of The Sound of Music, Herodias in Opera Australia’s Salome and Fricka in their revival of Der Ring des Nibelungen, Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana for State Opera of SA (Best Female Performance – ‘Curtain Call’ Awards), the title role in Prima Donna for the Adelaide Festival, Anna in Black Rider for Victorian Opera.
One of Australia’s most acclaimed young tenors, JOHN LONGMUIR was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His awards encompass all of Australia’s major competitions, having won the prestigious Herald-Sun Aria, the Opera and Arts Support Group Scholarship and the inaugural Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award. In 2019 he was nominated for his first Helpmann Award for his portrayal as the Captain in Berg’s Wozzeck.
